Community Building
Chittenden South Democracy for America is a grassroots organization of people from towns in southern Chittenden and northern Addison Counties, and we are mad as hell about the state of our union, SO we gather monthly and figure out constructive ways to direct our energy towards progressive change. And we have a lot of fun in the process. Our activities are designed to identify and support socially progressive, fiscally responsible candidates who will make laws and policies that are in line with our values. We participate in the process of making those laws and policies real by tracking legislation, attending hearings and demonstrations, writing letters-to-the-editor, and partnering with like-minded organizations. This year we have identified a number of priority issues we will focus on at the local, state, and national level: integrity of the vote, sustainability/global warming, health care for all, economic fairness, learning about the candidates, and de-escalation in Iraq while supporting troops. We have an online presence with our feet on the ground. As a grassroots group that is part of the nationwide Democracy for America, we have access to the excellent resources of DFA Training Academy, nationwide issue and candidate campaign efforts, and tools to help make our voices heard. Currently there are over 800 DFA groups across the county (and some ex-patriots have even formed them abroad!)  Please consider attending one of our monthly meetings; find out more about us on our website.

Buy Local!  - Vermont Agency of Agriculture page. Roger Albee, Secretary of the VAA, writes: The abundance of the Vermont harvest is legendary in the summer, and many people associate local foods with the summer growing season, but farm fresh products are available all year-round. Items available from Vermont farmers during the fall and winter months include turkeys, maple syrup, honey, milk, cheese, eggs, meat, dried beans, winter squash, root crops, grains, and apples. Vermont’s strong specialty food industry flourishes in every season. The agricultural landscape of Vermont is diverse and we are fortunate to have so many choices from season to season provided by our local, family farmers... I encourage you to enjoy the abundance Vermont producers offer and to honor the crucial role agriculture plays in making Vermont the special place we call home.

Land, Bread and History:  A Research Report on the Potential for Food Self-Sufficiency in Vermont
(1976) by George Burrill and James Nolfi. Consider that back in 1880, Vermont produced 3,742,280 bushels of oats. By 1970 that had fallen to a mere 144,410 bushels. In 1850 we yielded 535,955 bushels of wheat, but that had dropped to 19,912 bushels by 1970. The same pattern holds true for other grains such as barley; 420,761 bushels in 1890 but down to 2,640 bushels by 1970, and rye, 230,993 bushels in 1840 but a minuscule 650 bushels by 1970! This pattern was not confined to grains however. It held true for livestock; 266,296 hogs in 1850 but only 3,780 by 1970, and sheep; 1,681,819 in 1840 but only 6,715 by 1970. The same was found for fruit and vegetables with potato production falling from 8,869,751 bushels in 1840 down to 279,566 by 1970, pears-20,763 bushels in 1910 but only 1,030 in 1970 and plums-10,756 bushels in 1920 but a mere 60 bushels in 1970. The same holds true for most of the other categories in the data tables. What could we hope to gain by reclaiming such food self-sufficiency?  Additional reports by Burrill/Nolfi:
Energy Utilization in Vermont Agriculture

Housing, Land and Place
Knowledge of the land and how to live wisely and thriftily on it does not just lie there, dormant, like a crocus that will renew itself in the first flush of spring.
It must be cultivated, and it must be knotted, in practice, to the people who have cultivated it before us.
- Verlyn Klinkenborg

Getting Around Post Peak -  (a little humor; dedicated to Local Motion and Bike Recycle Vermont)
Many have asked us here at Vermont Peak Oil Network what one might expect to see in the realm of  post peak oil transportation.  While it is true that not all the oil in the ground will become inaccessible immediately, it is certain that the single occupancy vehicle (as we know it) will be much more expensive to run --- in a culture so driven by cars, how will we replace it?  How will we carry our groceriers, building supplies, furniture, even our children? In some parts of the world, this has been solved (to an extent few of us can imagine) by the bicycle and its close cousins.
